Bathroom Cleaning Hacks.

Tips for effective Bathroom Cleaning.

Love it or loathe it, we cannot escape that one room in our house – the bathroom (for obvious reasons)! After all, it is a multi-purpose room. Sometimes it’s where you hide from the energetic kid. Often, it’s where you fill up the tub and soak for some comforting self-care. But it’s also where bath and body products pile up, where grout gets grimy, and where that stubborn tub ring mocks your efforts to keep things clean. So today, we will go over a fast and easy way to clean the bathroom – and organization tips to keep it that way.

Steps for a Comprehensive Bathroom Cleaning

Gather together your Cleaning Supplies

Before you begin, round up everything you will need:

  • Paper towel or microfiber cloths
  • Cleaning solutions (commercial or a mix of baking soda, lemon juice, vinegar, and warm water)
  • Soft scrubber like Mr. Clean Magic Eraser
  • CLR if you have limescale
  • Garbage bags
  • Vacuum cleaner
  • Floor Mop

De-Clutter First

The first thing to do is remove all the dirty towels, clear the counter and empty the items under the sink. Second, place those towels and bath mats in the laundry bin. Third, place expired or empty products in the garbage bag. Fourth, add makeup brushes to the dishwasher’s cutlery tray. Finally, transfer the remaining items into another room so you can clean all the surfaces.

Now for the actual Bathroom Cleaning

It is best to start with the ‘dry cleaning,’ such as dusting and vacuuming, before moving on to ‘wet cleaning.’ For example, when doing a thorough bathroom cleaning, it is best to start with the ceiling and work your way down.

The Fan.

Using the vacuum and a long hose attachment, clean the dust off the fan cover. If safe to do so (you may need a ladder and a support person holding it), remove the cover and vacuum out the interior.

Counter Tops

A gentle detergent or baking soda and water mix will effectively clean the tile. If your counters and tub backsplash are granite or marble, use soap and water with a soft cloth.

Grout

If you don’t want to use a commercial cleaner for grout, you can make your own. However, be very careful. Some homemade solutions call for ammonia, which can irritate the nose and lungs. You should also never mix ammonia with bleach; this causes toxic gas. When working with ammonia, always do some research first and work with the windows open for ventilation. Here’s a hack for cleaning grout: scrub it with an old or cheap toothbrush. Or better yet, call in the professionals.

Shower and Showerhead

Mr. Clean Magic Eraser will tackle that tough tub ring in no time. Use your commercial or homemade cleaner to wipe down the inside of the tub. If you have hard water, follow the directions to descale the showerhead. If your shower curtain and liner are cloth, put them in the laundry. If they are vinyl, wipe them down with a gentle detergent.

Now here’s a hack for better mornings – replace a standard showerhead with an adjustable rain showerhead. Get a better spray with the pressure you prefer.

Sink

Descale the faucet, if necessary, with CLR. Use your cleaner on the sink basin.

Mirrors

A Paper towel and a vinegar solution (or window cleaner) will leave your mirror streak-free. Hack time! A clear label, a home printer, and a little creativity will give you a small affirmation sticker for your mirror. Put it out of the way in the bottom or top corner and greet each day with your favourite pick-me-up saying.

The Toilet

The dreaded toilet! We know it’s not the favourite thing to clean, but it’s necessary. You can use the toilet brush and your bathroom cleaner or use a foaming drop-in cleaner if you prefer a little more distance from this task. Hack – Lysol click gel and other “stick-on” cleaners activate with each flush to make your toilet self-cleaning. You’ll still need a good scrub now and then, but this hack keeps things cleaner for longer. Another hack: Essential oil, just a few drops, on the inside of the toilet paper roll is a discreet way to keep the bathroom smelling nice.

Walls and “forgotten” Surfaces

Use a damp cloth to spot-clean the walls. Don’t forget to wipe down the top of the medicine cabinet, the top of the tub surround, inside the cabinets, and the shower rod.

Floors

Use a damp cloth to wipe down the baseboard, then sweep and mop the floors. The tile gets slippery when wet, so clean any tile flooring last (from the walls to the door, so you don’t have to be on the wet tile at any point). If your tiles are looking a little worse for wear, consider Professional Tile and Grout Cleaning.

Keeping Things Tidy

A few accessories can make a big difference in keeping the bathroom tidy and organized. Consider:

  • A toothbrush and toothpaste holder
  • Liquid pump hand soap (cuts down on soap scum)
  • Hooks over the back of the door for housecoats and towels
  • Wall-mounted body wash/shampoo/conditioner canisters in the shower
