Cleaning versus Disinfecting

Cleaning first and Sanitizing second

Cleaning is good but is it enough? Since the start of the Pandemic, cleaning has become a two-step process for many.

First, there is regular cleaning to remove visible soiling (Step One). Secondly, a deeper cleaning service takes place – spraying with Sanitizers and Disinfectants (Step Two). This second step can help prevent the spread of germs. So while regular cleaning helps physically remove those germs, spraying disinfectant with specialized equipment kills stubborn germs because of their chemical compounds.

According to the Canadian Institute of Food Safety – CIFS, cleaning removes the visible signs of dirt, whilst sanitizing reduces the microorganisms to an acceptable level.

In a blog article, the CIFS stated that: “SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus that causes COVID-19, can live on surfaces for up to nine days." How certain that is, isn’t clear. The CDC suggests that in certain situations, infected persons may contaminate surfaces they touch. Nevertheless what is not in dispute is the high degree to which this virus is infectious, based on the number of complete shutdowns across counties and provinces in numerous countries worldwide.

In this latest Pandemic, any steps to mitigate the spread of the virus are being seen as a necessity by both business owners and home owners alike. Now whilst we will not make the bold claim that any disinfectant kills COVID-19, we can assert that we are taking proactive steps to use sanitization products and equipment recommended at government level for use during this Coronavirus outbreak.

What is the Process of Sanitization and Disinfection?

It must be noted that the sanitization and disinfection methods we use support rather than replace traditional cleaning processes. Therefore, we do not consider them to be an alternative to conventional cleaning methods. Instead, they are an added extra step that many are looking for in addition to their existing cleaning services.

Also, our Sanitization Services are primarily a preventative measure. That said, we will sanitize and disinfect homes and businesses where there has been COVID-19 exposure, provided infection and required quarantine periods are safely over. Please ask us about our COVID-19 protocols

We have adopted two Disinfectant processes:

♦ Disinfectant ULV Fogging
♦ Electrostatic Disinfectant Spraying

The Process of Electrostatic Spraying

♦ What is ULV Fogging?

ULV (Ultra Low Volume) Foggers use High Volume Air Technology to produce low volume, minuscule pressured droplets which form a fog. The droplet size ranges from about 5 to 50 Microns in diameter. Fogging is good for disinfecting open areas and it has also used extensively in Carpet Cleaning and Duct Cleaning for many years.

♦ What is Electrostatic Disinfectant Spraying?

Electrostatic Disinfection is the process whereby Disinfectant Liquid is electrically charged using Electrostatic Spraying Equipment. The technology positively charges the sanitizing chemicals to provide a magnetic coating to the surfaces it comes in contact with. It is far more thorough than any manual spray-and-wipe process. As most surfaces are either neutral or negatively charged, they are attracted to the positively charged mist. Electrostatic Disinfection is especially prudent for difficult-to-reach objects and surfaces as they provide comprehensively even coverage.

What Disinfectant Products are used in Sanitization and Disinfection?

The Disinfectants we will be using in our Sanitization Process are:

♦ Vital Oxide
♦ Benefect
♦ Mediclean – previously called Microban

Vital Oxide Disinfectant

Vital Oxide Disinfectant Solution

Please see the Official Vital Oxide Website for the most up-to-date Vital Oxide details. The information we have provided here is for informational purposes. It is simply so our customers can see some of the products we use for Sanitization purposes and to explain why we have chosen to use them.

Vital Oxide is approved for use by both Health Canada (DIN#02422654) and the EPA (Registration Number 82972-1). In addition, Vital Oxide is on the Health Canada COVID-19 List of Disinfectants but see below for more information.

It is also on the EPA List N: Disinfectants for Use against SARS-CoV-2. It was added on 26th March 2020 for use on Hard, Non-Porous Surfaces.

About Vital Oxide

One of the key ingredients in Vital Oxide is a stabilized and compound form of Chlorine Dioxide (CLO2). However, it is not bleach, and it is far gentler than other disinfectant products that contain bleach. In fact, Chlorine Dioxide has been used as a water purifier.

An Industrial Grade Hospital Disinfectant used for Sanitizing Residential and Commercial properties; it removes Mould and Fungi and Deodorizes.

It Kills 99.99% of germs, including bacteria and some viruses.

According to vitaloxide.com, its disinfectant has been “proven effective in killing” a range of viruses and bacteria, including but not limited to Salmonella, Swine Influenza (H1N1) Virus, Influenza and Hepatitis. It has been effective with many other infectious diseases as well. There is a complete list on the site vitaloxide.com. Vital Oxide is suitable for disinfecting Commercial Properties, Homes, Offices, Classrooms, Day Cares, Veterinarians, and Restaurants.

Vital Oxide is not only Government approved; it is very versatile. It can be used as a Carpet sanitizer and deodorizer and on Upholstery and Fabrics and other soft surfaces. In addition, it is an Antimicrobial Product used in Ductwork and HVAC Systems.

It is especially effective as an odour remover for pet urine and other pet odour issues. Used as a disinfectant in hospitals, it is excellent for killing Mildew. It Eliminates Allergens and is Suitable as a Food Contact Sanitizer. Vital Oxide contains no VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds). It is Non-Corrosive and Environmentally Friendly.

Is Vital Oxide safe to use?

For the definitive answer on whether the Vital Oxide is safe, check with the Manufacturer. Vital Solutions has a link to their Vital Oxide Safety Data Sheet (SDS).

That said, there are a few things that can be summarized…

  • Vital oxide is much gentler than most products.
  • It leaves no noxious smells or pollutants
  • It has an EPA Registered Low Toxicity Rating.
  • It is not harmful to adults or children.
  • Not only is it safe around pets, it is also hypo-allergenic
  • It is Biodegradable
  • It is safe around food with no rinse required.
  • It is bleach free and phosphate free
  • It is a Non-irritant to the skin
  • Nor is it a respiratory irritation
  • It does not leave any harmful residue.

Note: it could cause some irritation should there be any eye contact. Also whilst non-toxic to ingest it is suggested that a glass of water be given.

Two other disinfectants used in Sanitization Processes

Sanitizing Products

♥ Benefect Botanical Disinfectant

Benefect is a plant-based disinfectant, safe for Children and Pets and those with chemical sensitivity.
It can be applied and left. It does need to be rinsed or wiped.
It claims to kill over 99.99% of germs.
It is a Virucidal, a Bactericidal, A Fungicidal and a Tuberculocidal.

Further information about Benefect, including the Product, Data and SDS sheets, can be found on the Benefect Disinfectant Website.

♥ Mediclean Disinfectant Spray II

Like Benefect, Mediclean Disinfectant Spray II is a broad-spectrum disinfectant. However, this particular Mediclean product is only available in Canada. According to the makers: ProRestore, this is a product which is “effective against bacteria, fungi, mould, and viruses."

Further information about Mediclean, including the Product, Data and SDS sheets, can be found on the Legend Brands Restoration Site.

Will Disinfectants kill the latest Coronavirus COVID-19?

Not even Health Canada will claim that a specific disinfectant destroys COVID-19. The closest they will come to making such a claim is to suggest certain disinfectants are ‘likely to be effective’ because evidence has been submitted to them that demonstrated effectiveness against stubborn viruses similar to the SARS-CoV-2. Despite several website assertions to the contrary, Health Canada does not endorse specific disinfectants. However, it does provide a list of disinfectants it deems appropriate. That list is referred to as Hard-surface disinfectants and hand sanitizers (COVID-19). All products on the list will have a Canadian DIN (Drug Identification Number).

Vital Oxide is on that list.

In addition, Health Canada came up with a list of Disinfectants and Hand Sanitizers accepted under a COVID-19 interim measure. Some products will have a Canadian DIN#, and some will not. However, many are likely to have an EPA number (a number given by the United States Environmental Protection Agency). For example, Benefect Botanical Decon 30 has both a DIN and an EPA number, whereas Mediclean Germicidal Cleaner Concentrate (Lemon) only has an EPA Number.

What Equipment is used in Electrostatic Spraying and ULV Fogging?

Electrostatic Sprayers

The the main products we use are the VP200ES and the VP300ES Professional Cordless Electrostatic Sprayers made by Victory Innovations®.

Why we chose the Victory Cordless Sprayers.

We believe that the Victory Electrostatic Sprayers offer value for money yet provide a solution that can thoroughly disinfect businesses and homes with little to no fuss.

Victory Innovations® sells two different sprayers:

  • The VP300ES Professional Cordless Electrostatic Backpack Sprayer provides coverage of up to 23000 square feet and…
  • The VP200ES Professional Cordless Electrostatic Handheld Sprayer will provide a disinfectant coating up to 2800 square feet per tank. Both are ample for our current needs and have the advantage of being cordless.

While business owners and homeowners may feel the need for sanitization services, we know they do not want it to be a massive expense or disruption to their day or week. Therefore, our ability to do a high-quality electrostatic disinfectant spraying in the least amount of time with minimal upset to our customers’ lives is paramount.

We want to say we did “A Dang Good Sanitization!" And the Victory Sprayers seem to be able to help us keep our word by giving complete, effective, even coverage.

The Coronavirus Pandemic has inevitably created costs on PPE and Electrostatic Disinfection Services that were not needed before COVID-19, yet both are likely to be required for some time to come.

After researching several different sprayers, we concluded that these were two of the more superior products on the market we had seen in terms of Electrostatic Spraying Technology.

Other Sanitization Spraying and Fogging Equipment

Electric Atomizer and ULV Fogger

In addition, to the Victory Sprayer we use the following equipment:

♥ AS40 Hydro-Force ULV Fogger

The product shown in the picture is an AS40 Hydro-Force ULV Fogger We have used a ULV Fogger for Sanitizing Ductwork for a number of years now. The product is also suitable for Sanitizing Carpets and Upholstery in Homes and can be used as a regular spray as long as electronics are covered up.

♥ Electric Atomizer Aerosol Sterilization Sprayer

A more generalized Electrostatic Sprayer we use is also referred to as an Electric Atomizer Aerosol Sterilization Sprayer. This Professional Sprayer Applicator is good for use in smaller areas and is safe to use around electronics because the spray is so fine and does not produce too much dampness.
