The highly infectious COVID-19 Coronavirus has highlighted for some the need for more comprehensive Sanitization and Disinfection Services in their Homes and Offices. (More details on our mitigation steps can be found separately HERE)
As such we at Dang Good Carpet and Furnace Cleaning have added to our list of cleaning services. Not only are we continuing with our existing Sanitization Services for Carpet Cleaning, Furnace Cleaning and Upholstery Cleaning but we will now be providing Electrostatic Disinfection in both Residential Homes and Commercial Properties.
With so many different companies out there, we know how important it is to our customers to book with a cleaning company they can trust. Dang Good is our name but it is also our mission. We encourage you to check us out. Here are a few pointers to get you started….
Cleaning is good but is it enough? After you have completed your regular cleaning to remove visible soiling (Step One), we will spray with Sanitizers and Disinfectants (Step Two), which can help prevent the spread of germs. Whilst cleaning helps remove those germs, disinfecting products kill certain germs because of their chemical compounds.
According to the Canadian Institute of Food Safety – CIFS, cleaning removes the visible signs of dirt, whilst sanitizing reduces the microorganisms to an acceptable level.
In a recent blog article the CIFS stated that: “SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus that causes COVID-19, can live on surfaces for up to nine days." How certain that is, isn't clear. The CDC suggests that the virus may spread in ways other than person to person but that it is “not thought to be the main way the virus spreads." However they admit that they are still learning about the ways in which the virus spreads. Nevertheless what is not in dispute is the level of infectiousness this virus is considered to be, based on the complete shutdown of numerous countries.
In this latest Pandemic any steps to mitigate the spread of the virus are being seen as a necessity by both business owners and home owners alike. Now whilst we will not make the bold claim that any disinfectant kills COVID-19, we can assert that we are taking proactive steps to use sanitization products and equipment recommended for use during this Coronavirus outbreak.

The Disinfectants we will be using in our Sanitization Process are:
♦ Vital Oxide
♦ Mediclean – previously called Microban
For the most up-to-date information on Vital Oxide, please see the Official Vital Oxide Website. The information we have provided here is for informational purposes. It is simply so our customers can see some of the products we are using for Sanitization purposes and why we have chosen to use them .
Vital Oxide has been approved for use by both Health Canada (DIN#02422654) and the EPA (Registration Number 82972-1). Vital Oxide is on the Health Canada COVID-19 List of Disinfectants but see below for more information.
It is also on the EPA List N: Disinfectants for Use against SARS-CoV-2. It was added on 26th March 2020 for use on Hard Non-Porous Surfaces.
One of the key ingredients in Vital oxide is a stabilized and compound form of Chlorine Dioxide (CLO2). However, it not a bleach and it is far gentler than other disinfectant products containing bleach. In fact, Chlorine Dioxide has been used as a water purifier.
It is an Industrial Grade, Hospital Disinfectant. Used both for Sanitization in Residential and Commercial properties. It is also a Mold Killer, a Fungi Remover, and a Deodorizer. It Kills 99.99% of germs including bacteria and some viruses.
According to vitaloxide.com, it's disinfectant has been “proven effective in killing” a range of viruses and bacteria including but not limited to: Salmonella, Swine Influenza (H1N1) Virus, Influenza and Hepatitis. It has been effective with many other infectious diseases as well. There is a complete list on the site vitaloxide.com. Vital Oxide is good for disinfecting Homes, Offices, Classrooms, Day Cares, Veterinarians and Restaurants to name a few.
Vital Oxide is not only Government approved it is very versatile. It can be used as a Carpet sanitizer and deodorizer, as well as on Upholstery and Fabrics and other soft surfaces. It is an Antimicrobial Product used in Ductwork and HVAC Systems
It is especially effective as an Odor remover for pet urine and other pet odor issues. It used as a disinfectant in Hospitals. Great for Killing Mold and Mildew. Note: it could cause mild irritation should there be any eye contact.
Benefect is a plant based disinfectant, safe for Children and Pets and those with chemical sensitivity.
It can be applied and left, not needing to be rinsed or wiped.
It claims to kill over 99.99% of germs.
It is a Virucidal, a Bactericidal, A Fungicidal and a Tuberculocidal.
Further information about Benefect including the Product, Data and SDS sheets can be found on the Benefect Site.
Like Benefect, Mediclean Disinfectant Spray II is a broad spectrum disinfectant. This particular Mediclean product is only available in Canada. According to the makers: ProRestore, this is a product which is “effective against bacteria, fungi, mold, and viruses."
Further information about Mediclean including the Product, Data and SDS sheets can be found on the Legend Brands Restoration Site.
Not even Health Canada will make the claim that a specific disinfectant destroys COVID-19. The closest they will come to stating that, is to suggest certain disinfectants are 'likely to be effective' because evidence has been submitted to them that demonstrated an effectiveness against stubborn viruses similar to the SARS-CoV-2. Despite a number of website assertions to the contrary, Health Canada does not endorse specific disinfectants. However it does provide a list of disinfectants it deems appropriate. That list is called: Hard-surface disinfectants and hand sanitizers (COVID-19). All products on the list will have a Canadian DIN (Drug Identification Number).
Vital Oxide is on that list.
In addition, Health Canada came up with a list of Disinfectants and Hand Sanitizers accepted under a COVID-19 interim measure. Some products on that list will have a Canadian DIN # and some will not. However many are likely to have an EPA number (a number given by the United States Environmental Protection Agency). For example, Benefect Botanical Decon 30 has both a DIN and an EPA number whereas Mediclean Germicidal Cleaner Concentrate (Lemon) only has an EPA Number.
Firstly, it must be noted that the sanitization and disinfection methods we use support rather than replace regular cleaning processes. We do not considered them to be an alternative to traditional cleaning methods. Rather they are an added extra step that many are looking for in addition to their existing cleaning services. We have adopted two Disinfectant processes:
♦ Disinfectant ULV Fogging
♦ Electrostatic Disinfectant Spraying
ULV (Ultra Low Volume) Foggers use High Volume Air Technology to produce low volume, minuscule pressured droplets which form a fog. The droplet size ranges from about 5 to 50 Microns in diameter. Fogging is good for disinfecting open areas and it has also used extensively in Carpet Cleaning and Duct Cleaning for many years.
Electrostatic Disinfection is the process whereby Disinfectant Liquid is electrically charged using Electrostatic Spraying Equipment. The technology positively charges the sanitizing chemicals to provide a magnetic coating to the surfaces it comes in contact with. It is far more thorough than any manual spray and wipe process. As most surfaces are either neutral or negatively charged, they are attracted to the positively charged mist. Electrostatic Disinfection is especially prudent for difficult to reach objects and surfaces as they provide a comprehensively even coverage.
The main product that we will be using once received is an EMist EM360™ Backpack Sprayer made by EMist Disinfection Solutions. We researched several different sprayers and came to the conclusion that this product far outweighed others we had seen in terms of Electrostatic Spraying Technology.
Sometimes you get what you pay for. It certainly was not the cheapest solution on the market but price in this instance was less of a concern to us than picking a product that could comprehensively and thoroughly disinfect businesses and homes with little to no fuss. One of the first things that appealed to us was EM360’s ability to comprehensively disinfect an area of up to 54000 square feet in an hour and be able to spray an average room in less than three minutes.
Whilst business owners and homeowners may feel the need for sanitization services, we know they do not want it to be a massive expense or disruption to their day or week. Our ability to do a high-quality electrostatic spraying in the least amount of time with minimal upset to our customer's lives was paramount. It is quiet too, only being 65 decibels so barely above the sound of normal conversation.
We want to be able to say we did “A Dang Good Sanitization!” And the EM360 seems to be able to help us keep our word. The EMist’s ability to do a full 360-degree coverage is an essential feature too. It efficiently and effectively uses considerably less chemicals than other sprayers on the market and involves less labor time as well. Both those factors meant we would be acquiring a cost-effective product, reducing our overhead in the long run, and ultimately be able to pass on the savings on to our customers.
The Coronavirus Pandemic has inevitably created costs on PPE and Electrostatic Disinfection Services that were not needed so much prior to COVID-19 yet both are likely to be needed and wanted for some time to come.
In addition, to the EMist Electrostatic Sanitization Sprayer we will be using the following:
The product shown in the picture is an AS40 Hydro-Force ULV Fogger We have used a ULV Fogger for Sanitizing Ductwork for a number of years now. The product is also suitable for Sanitizing Carpets and Upholstery in Homes and can be used as a regular spray as long as electronics are covered up.
A more generalized Electrostatic Sprayer we use is also referred to as an Electric Atomizer Aerosol Sterilization Sprayer. This Professional Sprayer Applicator is good for use in smaller areas and is safe to use around electronics because the spray is so fine and does not produce any damp.
Any Business or Residence that is looking for an extra layer of protection against infection can benefit from our Sanitization Service.
