Furnace and Duct Cleaning involves the removal of dust, debris and contaminants from your furnace, air ducts and other HVAC System components. Though technically distinct, furnace and duct cleaning are interconnected especially in truckmounted duct cleaning. This is because it requires access to the main plenum, making it a shared process. (See Best Method of HVAC Cleaning below) or read on for more information about furnace and duct cleaning.
An HVAC System (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) is what heats, cools and moves air around your home. The components of the system include:
Furnace Cleaning - focuses on the internal elements of your forced air heating system. The furnace is cleaned together with other major parts such as the blower, fan, burner and heat exchanger. The objective is to remove dust and debris to improve efficiency and safety.
Duct Cleaning - involves removing dust, dirt, pet hair, foreign objects and allergens from the **ducts. (**Ducts can also be referred to as: air ducts, vents or air vents.) The whole system of ducts is generally referred to as ductwork. These terms are used interchangeably in the HVAC Industry. To expand further, the ductwork is a series of metal ducts or tunnels that provide a channel through which air flows, either to heat or cool the home.
Each room in the home will usually have one or two vents. More if it is a large room. The vents are the grids in the walls, ceilings or floors. These are situated at the opening of a duct for air to either be sucked in or out. The smaller vents are often referred to as hot air vents. However, that is not strictly the case. For example, when central air conditioning is available, those same vents provide cooler air to lower the temperature. The larger vents you see are the return air vents. As the name suggests, the air must be returned to the furnace or air conditioner.
A fully trained two-person crew carries out the cleaning service. Each crew member is trained to meet our impeccable standards of professionalism. Cleanliness and customer service are paramount.
1. HVAC Cleaning Preparation
Our professional HVAC cleaning begins with a brief inspection and assessment of your furnace and duct system to ensure a thorough and effective cleaning. Upon arrival, our technicians will review the scope of work with you and confirm they have clear access to all vents and the furnace. They’ll kindly ask you to secure any pets to ensure their safety during the service. As part of our safety protocol, the team will also complete a jobsite hazard assessment before work begins.
2. Truckmount Equipment Setup
Our technicians will begin unloading the necessary equipment while carefully protecting your floors and walls using blankets and corner guards (also known as “ducs”). They will also switch to clean indoor footwear. One technician will start sealing off vents to prevent dust blowback and ensure optimal airflow pressure. Meanwhile, the second technician will assess or create access points near the furnace to attach the main vacuum hose. We employ the Push-Pull Negative Air Pressure Method for our furnace and air duct cleaning service, as recommended by the Qualified Air Duct Cleaners Association with whom we have membership.
3. Before the Cleaning Starts
Before beginning the cleaning process, our technicians will turn off your HVAC system to ensure safety and prevent air circulation during service. They will also adjust your thermostat settings as needed to avoid the system turning back on prematurely. This helps maintain consistent airflow control and protects your equipment throughout the cleaning.
4. Duct Cleaning Process
The duct cleaning technician will start the cleaning routine with the air duct vents furthest away from the furnace - usually on the top floor - and gradually work their way toward the furnace. As dust and debris are pulled from vents by the negative air pressure, other tools are used to push and agitate the dirt and grime simultaneously. The dirt will be forced into the main trunk line of the HVAC system. It is then sucked into the large, industrial-grade vacuum which is attached to the furnace by the cleaning technician at the outset of the furnace and vent cleaning procedure and the debris is subsequently removed from the home.
5. Furnace Cleaning Process
While one technician is working on cleaning the air ducts, the other technician is working in the furnace room cleaning the heating components. All contaminants are sucked into the powerful, industrial-grade vacuum connected to the furnace to ensure full-system extraction.
6. System Restart and Final Check
After the cleaning, your heating system will be turned back on, and a run test will be performed to ensure everything is functioning properly. If you have a smart thermostat, we’ll either adjust it for you or guide you through the process.
7. Customer Walk-through
Once a comprehensive cleaning of all the elements of your heating system (mentioned in the section above) have been completed, our technicians will walk you through the work performed and conduct a vent count for the final bill – you only get charged for vents you have. All are cleaned. If any issues or observations came up during the cleaning, they’ll discuss them with you and offer recommendations where appropriate.
Check out our Guide to Air Vent Cleaning which explains in more detail the HVAC Cleaning Process.

This is a discussion that is still being debated but customer testimonials and experience support the theory that duct cleaning improves indoor air quality. Read on to find out more.
Indoor Air Quality Concerns
Homeowners can often become concerned about Indoor Air Quality, especially if they spend an extended period indoors due to one of Calgary's typical cold spells or when forest fires cause the air to become smokey in the drier summer months. Subsequently, they look to Air Duct Cleaning as a solution. But how are Indoor Air Quality and Duct Cleaning connected?
What Does the Research Say?
The positive correlation between Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) and Air Duct Cleaning is still under scrutiny. Little research has been done on its effectiveness. Furthermore, what research has been done stems back more than twenty-five years ago with approximately thirty homes.
The EPA on Duct Cleaning
The Environmental Protection Agency in the US EPA asserts in an article on the merits of cleaning air ducts that no company can definitively state that air duct cleaning prevents health issues. Likewise, there is insufficient scientific evidence for us to unanimously claim that dust and other airborne particles increase in the air due to dirty ductwork.
Empirical Supporting Evidence
Nevertheless, some believe that Duct Cleaning may help improve Indoor Air Quality. And their assertions are backed up with circumstantial evidence. One family, in particular, spoke in a news video about finding relief after a furnace cleaning. In addition, some of our customers speak of noticeable improvements in Asthma and Allergy Symptoms. Two customers in particular (who gave us 5 Stars on Google), noticed a difference after we had carried out a Furnace Cleaning for them. Their reviews are below.
The answer can vary depending on how much attention you typically give to other major areas in your home. Many people schedule regular carpet cleaning or upholstery cleaning—so it might be worth considering the same for furnace and vent cleaning.
If the photos and testimonials above haven’t sparked your interest, this video offers a closer look at all the debris removed when you get an Air Duct Cleaning Service—and what a professional cleaning can remove to help support cleaner air.
This photo was taken during a furnace and duct cleaning for one of our customers. It shows how easily debris and toys can find their way into the ductwork overtime. This buildup may contribute to indoor air quality issues, especially during Calgary’s long winters when homes are sealed tight and people spend more time indoors. As an added bonus, regular duct cleaning can help reduce airborne dust and potentially lessen the need for frequent dusting too!
Allergens from Pet hair and other pollutants are not good for those suffering from Asthma or other Respiratory Illnesses. Scheduled Air Duct Cleaning may help eliminate those contaminated airborne particles! Check out our blog post on The Benefits of Duct Cleaning, one of which is helping with furnace efficiency. The last thing you need is a break down during those harsh Alberta winter months!
We recommend you get the Furnace and Vents cleaned every two years. Over time, dust and grime build up in the Furnace and Ductwork, putting a strain on the smooth running of the furnace and adding extra, unnecessary dust particles into the home. Regular Professional Furnace Cleaning helps keep your Furnace performing as it should.
Our crews are often surprised by what finds its way into the HVAC System! In addition to seeing a build-up of general debris and pet hair, we have seen pet toys, children’s toys, underwear, and even photographs! How and why these items get into the vents is a little puzzling for sure, but all of them provide a potential fire hazard risk.
Below we highlight the different circumstances that might prompt an unscheduled Furnace and Duct Cleaning Service.
Maintaining the Home
Furnace and Duct Cleaning helps keep your furnace running safely and efficiently, giving you peace of mind and reassurance that you are doing what you can to avoid a breakdown. HVAC Maintenance may help lower fuel bills saving you money.
Noticing More Dust
If you are seeing significantly more dust you may benefit from a duct cleaning. Similarly, if your filters seem to need changing more frequently or your vents seem extra dirty or clogged, it just might be time to give your HVAC System a 'spring cleaning'.
Moving
Are you about to move into your new home? Whether it be a brand-new home where contractors have been on-site or simply a new home to you that has had existing residents, we suggest cleaning and sanitizing ensure that your home is truly clean for your new life transition.
Sometimes furnace and duct cleaning is a requirement on move-out at the end of your tenancy.
Renovating
Have you recently had renovations done? Drywall and dust particles can accumulate in the HVAC System, especially if you forgot to cover up all those vents while the work was being carried out.
Living with Pets
Do you have pets with medium to long hair? You would be surprised at the accumulation of pet hair we find while cleaning your heating and cooling systems. Just take a look at some of the pictures on this page if you need convincing.
Living with Children
Items like toys or household objects often end up in vents—especially in homes with young children. The photos above highlight what can accumulate in the ductwork. Again a potential fire hazard, not to mention the cost of replacing missing toys!
Living with Allergies
In addition, pet dander (although not visible) can be a nightmare for those with allergies. If you have pets as well as allergies, we would highly recommend that the ductwork be sanitized after it has been cleaned to remove any lingering bacteria.
Living with Mice!
Finally, we have cleaned some homes where dead mice and mice droppings or other vermin have been evident in the HVAC System. What better reason to get a Furnace and Duct Cleaning than for the sake of hygiene and health?
How to choose the Best Furnace and Duct Cleaning Company in your area.
Below is a check list to help you choose the right company in Calgary.
Reputation and Expertise
Not all companies are created equal. You may need to make sure that you choose a company that knows what they are doing and provides the most reliable service possible.
Make sure you check out the company on-line. There are several options available. Such as (but not limited to) the following:
Google Reviews,
Consumer Choice Awards
Better Business Bureau,
TrustedPros
Facebook
Yelp
and now AI (Artificial Intelligence).
Feel free to do your own research on us. Nevertheless, you will see we have over 2500 Google 5-Star reviews. We have some useful links on our Reviews Page. You will also find valuable information on our blog under the category: “A Dang Good Reputation."
Licensed and Insurance
All Furnace and Duct Cleaning Companies should be Licensed, have Liability Insurance and be insured through WCB - the Workers Compensation Board. We have all three. We are fully insured and have the proper licenses to operate safely and legally. Please feel free to ask about it when you make your booking.
The Right Equipment
Ensure that the Equipment used is dedicated HVAC Cleaning Equipment that is powerful enough to do the job. We use specialized Truckmount Equipment approved by QUADCA and NADCA.
HVAC Cleaning Expertise
Choosing a qualified company is essential when it comes to duct cleaning. Inexperienced providers can unintentionally cause damage to your HVAC system, so it's important to work with a team that not only knows the industry but also stands behind their work and takes responsibility when issues arise.
Mark, Co-Owner of Dang Good Carpet and Furnace Cleaning, brings over 40 years of experience to the cleaning industry. He personally oversees the training of every technician to ensure each job meets our high standards. Since launching in April 2016, our business has remained committed to delivering an impeccable service across all areas of cleaning.
We’re also honoured to have received several industry awards in recognition of our commitment to excellence.
Value For Money
It’s reasonable to be cautious about low prices—especially when it comes to home services. Phrases like “the $99.99 house special” are often mentioned because they can sometimes involve unexpected limitations or upselling.
We, too, would not necessarily recommend going with the cheapest, unless the cheapest is also the best. A very rare combination and probably not sustainable for a business over time.
We aim to keep our pricing transparent. Our base rate is $130 for one furnace and up to 5 vents. Additional vents—both hot and cold—are $10 each. A waste disposal fee (details in the footer) and GST also apply. More pricing information is on our Contact Page.
Some of our customers have shared that they were initially suspicious about our pricing, but after reading our reviews, decided to give us a try—and were glad they did.
See our Air Duct Cleaning Cost – Blog Post for a Comprehensive Look at pricing across different contractors.
No Surprise Add-Ons
It’s smart to clarify a company’s approach to upselling before committing to an appointment. Some companies may quote one price but then apply pressure to add extra services once they’re in your home. That’s not how we operate. While we may mention additional services that could be beneficial, they’re entirely optional. We respect your decision and never push for add-ons during the appointment.
We aim to be the ‘Top of the Pile’ when you want to know: “Who is the Best Furnace Cleaning Company near me?” Always striving for value, we are well respected in the Community. The Best of Calgary names us as Top Three Air Duct Cleaners. We understand that Superior Quality Duct Cleaning is essential to our Customers. We aim to go above and beyond to meet expectations.
Cleaning the indoor lint filter alone is not sufficient to avoid the risk of fire in your dryer vent. Over time, dust and lint build up on the outside vent too. Clogged Vents can detrimentally affect the performance of the dryer. Why not take advantage of our add-on feature when booking your Furnace Cleaning? Add-on costs are:
A reverse whip attached to our powerful truckmount is pushed right up inside the vent and agitated to suck out all the stubborn lint. This powerful technique makes it unnecessary to take the vent apart. We would suggest at the very least having your dryer vent cleaned with your Furnace Cleaning Service. We are currently named Number One on The Best Calgary Site for the Top Dryer Vent Cleaning Services.
Try these Dryer Hacks before your next load.
If the glass on your gas fireplace has become cloudy or the flame pattern or color seems irregular, it may be time for a thorough cleaning. We provide a detailed gas fireplace cleaning service that includes removal of the glass, taking the fireplace apart and extracting built-up dust and debris. We then polish the glass to a smudge-free shine. Once cleaned, the unit is carefully reassembled and checked to ensure everything is operating as it should.
This service is available as an optional add-on when booking your furnace and duct cleaning appointment. Our Gas Fireplace Cleaning Add-On Pricing is:
